The Ministry of Environment conducted a comprehensive study on the health of inhabitants close to the Samcheonpo Thermal Power Plant and discovered that the levels of certain hazardous materials in their bodies were up to four times higher than in other areas. This alarming finding necessitates ongoing environmental monitoring and health examinations.

The village, located two kilometers from the power plant, was the focus of an asbestos effect assessment. Of the 40 villagers tested, 15 were diagnosed with lung problems. To further investigate the effects of the power plant, 320 students from three local elementary schools had their urine samples tested. The results revealed that the concentration of naphthalene metabolites was 1.0 higher than those from elementary school students in other places.

The Ministry of Environment is now taking immediate action to reduce the hazardous material levels in the environment. They have launched an investigation into the power plant to identify the source of the pollutants and have implemented a series of measures to mitigate their effects. These include the installation of filtration systems and the regular inspection of the power plant’s emissions. The Ministry is also providing medical examinations to the villagers and students affected by the power plant.

As a result, individuals living in this region are more likely to experience a greater level of exposure to naphthalene metabolites than individuals living in less polluted areas. In addition to the potential health risks associated with elevated levels of naphthalene metabolites, there is also the potential for long-term damage to the environment, as these pollutants can accumulate in the soil, water, and air. Thus, it is essential to take steps to reduce emissions of pollutants in the region in order to protect both human health and the environment.
