Youth violence gets serious in Korea

group bullying in a high school dormitory

A freshman at a high school was subjected to a gang assault by ten male students from the 2nd and 3rd grades of the same school. The victim was attacked by the bullies because they did not like the way he spoke. The victim was bruised on his thighs and buttocks, as well as his chest area.

When the freshmen living in the dormitory went home for the weekend, their parents noticed the victim’s physical condition and reported it to the police. It has been reported that a senior bully wielded an iron pipe during the assault, causing more severe injuries.

The school was unaware of the incident until the victim’s family reported it, because the dormitory teacher did not notice anything suspicious. The parents of previous victims claimed that similar assaults had occurred in the dormitory, raising serious concerns about the safety of students living there.

The school’s response to the incident has been criticized for being delayed. Although the school took measures to ban the bullies from attending school, this was not enough to appease the victim’s family and others concerned about student safety. The police are currently investigating the incident, and plan to call the group of students for questioning soon. This incident highlights the urgent need for schools and dormitories to take the safety and wellbeing of their students seriously, and to implement effective measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
